September Topic: to buy or not to buy?

As promised, we will be bringing you a new topic each month. All of our posts will be focused around this one idea. …and we’re off:

I just think she should be an extraordinary woman, wherever she gets her clothes from.     Vivienne Westwood

We think Vivienne said it best – style isn’t just about spending $1000 (or even, in our case, $30) on the #1 thing InStyle told you that you must buy this season. But it’s difficult to break out of that old habit – magazines tell you what to buy, and you buy it.

One of our (least) favorite things about magazines is when they tell you to buy a product, such as mascara, and, then, there is the ad for the mascara on the opposite page. And remember how they always tell you what makeup they’re using on models in fashion spreads? Our insider-fashion friend interned at a major style mag one summer, and they told her to make those captions up so that it would sound like they were using more expensive makeup than they actually were. Not hearsay. TRUE STORY.

But, how do you do it? How do you lead and not follow? And how do you accomplish this on your (our) nonprofit salary?
