shop local: holiday edition
One of our readers, the fabulous Elizabeth, asked that we share some tips on where to holiday shop (both for presents and party-friendly garb) around the District. Our readers are obviously way smarter than us. So we’ll be sharing some of our favorite places over the coming weeks as you become more and more desperately behind on your shopping. First stop: U Street.
The 14th & U area has some amazing shopping when it comes to hard to buy for people (i.e. our mothers). Merin’s top three places to find gifts in her ‘hood (start at 14th & S on the east side of the street, then walk up):
- Home Rule (1807 14th Street NW) has amazing home goods for the foodie in your family. Whether it’s the latest and greatest microplane grater or a nifty set of nesting bowls, don’t miss this gem of a store.
- Go Mama Go (1809 14th Street NW) is right next to Home Rule and has an inventory as diverse as it is eclectic. From Marimekko mugs to mother of pearl salad forks to paper lanterns, there is always something good to be had here. Also great for hostess presents.
- Treasury (1842 14th Street NW) is an all around favorite. You can probably find a great party dress and present for your best friend all in one here. Owner Cathy has an eye for vintage artifacts that are carefully updated. I was in the other day and had to claw myself away in order to preserve my bank account.
- Rckndy (1515 U Street NW) cures all of my design freak ills. They have groovy furniture, all sorts of Alessi home goods, and the best curated selection of $10-$50 goods I have ever seen. My dad got scotch rocks (to cool his scotch, naturally) for his birthday, the LSH got a book about architecture in London for Christmas, and my best friend Cri got some fabulous paper cups with noses on them as a hostess present. I can always find something for anyone here.
